KKR vs RCB: Royal Challengers Bangalore lose Pujara, Kohli after slow start

NEW DELHI: After opting to bowl first, Kolkata seemed to dominate the proceeding as Suchitra Senanayake and Jacques Kallis dismissed Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli early in their IPL 6 match at JSCA Stadium Complex in Ranchi.

Kolkata got their first breakthrough when Senanayake dismissed Pujara (5) who was caught at cover point by Laxmipathy Balaji after Kolkata skipper Gautam Gambhir won the toss and decided to bowl.

Soon after, Bangalore skipper Kohli (17) too failed to make an impression when he had his stumps knocked over after getting an inside edge off the bowling of Kallis.

The Knight Riders have made two changes for this match with Senanayake and Debabrata Das replacing Eoin Morgan and Iqbal Abdulla.

On the other hand, the Royal Challengers bring in Abhimanyu Mithun for Syed Mohammad.

The Knight Riders will be eyeing revenge in their match against the Royal Challengers in Ranchi's first IPL game at the Jharkhand Cricket Association's International stadium.

It is exactly a month since the two teams clashed in Bangalore where Chris Gayle blew away KKR with a 50-ball 85 that was laced with nine sixes.

Riding on Gayle's brilliance and some other notable performers, RCB are among the top-four in the points table while KKR are languishing in the bottom half.

Both teams will go into the match high on confidence winning their last games. While KKR comprehensively beat a hapless Pune Warriors, RCB pulled off a thriller against the Delhi Daredevils on Friday.

We Still Have a Fair Chance: Gambhir

GambhirGambhir

RANCHI: His team is virtually out of the playoffs race having lost eight of their 13 matches, but an optimistic Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Gautam Gambhir on Saturday said they still have a "fair chance" of making the cut in the ongoing Indian Premier League.

"At the moment, the competition is pretty open. We still have a fair chance of reaching the playoffs. For me what matters is the remaining three games and we face RCB on Sunday, which is a must-win game for us. Hopefully, we can try and deliver," Gambhir told reporters on the eve of the match.

The Virat Kohli-led RCB are coming off a win against Delhi Daredevils and asked how KKR plan to counter the likes of Chris Gayle, Kohli and AB de Villiers, Gambhir said, "We do not strategise against individuals.

"We do not discuss individuals; we will only look to do what we do best and stick to our strength."

The KKR captain is also pinning his hopes on Sunil Narine to counter the strong RCB.

"We have played on this track, a spinning one and can benefit Sunil Narine," he said.

Talking about his side's bowling attack, he said, "KKR is not dependent only on its spin bowlers. If you see in the tournament, Jacques Kallis and L Balaji too have done well for us, which are great signs for us.

"Spinners have been successful for us, they have been different, and they have not been conventional spinners. Our bowling unit on the whole has been good."

Gambhir said his team would look to win its remaining three matches. Kolkata have to their credit 10 points from thirteen games.

"We are looking forward to win all the three matches. Be it any situation, we as a team enter the ground thinking about a victory. We do not play to participate. We will look to play some good cricket and get a win."

The city will also host the KKR versus Pune Warriors match on May 15.

IPL not my comeback platform: Gautam Gambhir

Even before taking guard in IPL-6,Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Gautam Gambhirwent on the offensive, rubbishing talk that the Twenty20 league was a platform for the axed Team India opener to push for a comeback in the national team.

"I don't play here as an individual, but for a team called KKR. I am a part of a team which are the defending champions... I don't see IPL as my comeback platform," Gambhir said on Tuesday, the eve of KKR's opening encounter against Delhi Daredevils at Eden Gardens.

The skipper doesn't think there will be extra pressure on the side for being defending champions.

"Being defending champions doesn't mean pressure (on the team), rather it gives you more confidence. We have got the monkey off the back because in the previous four years it was said that KKR were more popular off the field, but after winning the championship, we have proved that we can play good cricket as well," he reasoned. Looking ahead to the sixth edition of the tournament, Gambhir felt the confidence gained from IPL-5 will help the team "play some fearless cricket this time."

The skipper was not ready to talk about any particular individual, but saw the team as a unit. New Zealand wicketkeeper-batsman Brendon McCullum's absence in the first match, thus, doesn't worry him. "We've got a lot of quality in the dressing room to fill in any gap. Now is the time to go out there and step up to the opportunity." Asked about Yusuf Pathan's poor run last season, Gambhir said, "Everyone has to fire, not only he."

The skipper is aware that his trump card, West Indian 'mystery' spinner Sunil Narine, has to be used judiciously. "It's all about strategy and deciding when is the right time to bring on someone. And it's not only about Narine, bowlers like Jacques Kallis and Balaji are all ready for the challenge," Gambhir said.

Pepsi IPL 2013 begins with a starry, starry night

A grand and glittering opening ceremony heralded the start of the Pepsi IPL 2013 in style at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium. The venue resembled a star-studded galaxy with embellished lightings, the world’s cricket stars and performing entertainers.
Renowned artists from the entertainment industry, the likes of international rapper Pitbull and Bollywood actor and co-owner of the Kolkata Knight Riders, Shah Rukh Khan, along with Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone owned the stage and held sway over the packed audience. Besides the celebrities performing, the stage was also set on fire by flying drummers, Chinese percussionists and breathtaking fireworks.
Amid all the glitz and glamour cricket held its limelight in a suave and dignified way. The captains of the nine teams participating in IPL 2013 took centre stage when they joined hands to pledge adherence to the belief, ‘Play hard, Play fair’ by signing on the MCC Spirit of Cricket board. Former India cricketer and current commentator, Ravi Shastri administered the oath.
The moment that surprised and stunned close to 45,000 people present at the stadium came just before the captains signed the MCC Spirit of Cricket oath. A girl clad in white appeared over the arena, swinging a bunch of colourful balloons, carrying the Pepsi IPL 2013 Trophy. She stopped at the centre and handed over the trophy to the captain of the current holders, Gautam Gambhir.
Salt Lake Stadium, one of the biggest football arenas in Asia, was packed and alive with the noise of passionate fans. The people of Kolkata reserved the loudest cheers for their adopted son and captain of KKR, Gautam Gambhir and team owner, SRK.
The Bollywood superstar began his performance by thanking the West Bengal chief minister, Mamata Bannerjee, BCCI President, N Srinivasan, IPL Chairman, Rajeev Shukla and IPL COO, Sundar Raman for their presence at the event.
He then set the arena on a foot-tapping mode by dancing to a few hit numbers from his movies. He also displayed some of his moves to the tune of well known Bengal musicians, Bappi Lahiri and Usha Uthup.
The last performance of the day was from Pitbull, who engaged the crowd and started a party. The Pitbull show lasted well into the evening after the Opening Nite was over.
Those who attended the event, it was an evening that culminated with tired feet, sore throats and memories of an unforgettable time at Salt Lake Stadium!

Was a dream tournament for me: Narine

Sunil Narine came into IPL 2012 as a mystery. At the end of it, he remains so to most batsmen in the world. An enigma from the Caribbean, Narine was spotted in the 2011 CLT20 when he bamboozled many a batsman with his knuckle ball. The Kolkata Knight Riders bid high on him at the 2012 IPL Players’ Auction; and as it turned out, it was the wisest USD 700,000 spent this year by any IPL team.

The off-spinner from Trinidad & Tobago weaved his magic in IPL 2012 with 24 wickets – one less than Purple Cap winner, Morne Morkel. With an economy rate of 5.47, Narine now tops the list of the stingiest bowlers in the five-year-old tournament.

Although he failed to pick a wicket in the final and win the Purple Cap, Narine cherished making a vital contribution to the Knight Riders maiden title win. The soft-spoken offie spoke to iplt20.comafter KKR’s victory in the final against the Chennai Super Kings.

Is it a dream tournament for you?

Yeah, it is a dream tournament, and the way the guys performed today was magnificent.

Are you happy with your efforts?

I am happy with my effort, and all the 16-17 players have given a huge effort.

What was the talk in the dressing room ahead of this final?

Guys were keen for it and up for it. So, I think it was a great team effort in doing that.

How is Gautam Gambhir as a captain?

He does not put any pressure on the players. He let the guys do what they are accustomed to. If a batsman is attacking by nature, he can hit the ball, no matter what the situation is. He is a good captain and all he asks for is go there and give your best.

What was going in your mind when there were 190 runs to chase?

It was a bit challenging, but we had the batsmen in the hunt to do that; and they did it.

Cracker on cards after sizzling night

What
After all the razzmatazz of the opening ceremony, it is time for fireworks on the field. It is the opening game of the Pepsi IPL 2013 and features defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders and the Delhi Daredevils.
The Knight Riders were a daunting outfit under Gautam Gambhir last season, besting then defending champions Chennai Super Kings, who were favourites, in their own backyard in the title clash. They begin this season as firm favourites, given the fact that they have retained the core of the team that did duty for them last season.
The Delhi Daredevils on the other hand have been among the consistent performers in the history of the IPL, finishing in the top four in three off the five seasons that have been played out. They will be hoping to put in that extra bit to get above and will certainly look to lay their hands on the beautiful trophy at the end of the competition.
When
Wednesday, March 3, 2013, 8 p.m
Where
Eden Gardens, Kolkata
The Protagonists
For Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, there is more at stake than just helping their teams win the IPL. Both players, who combined together to form India’s most successful opening pair (in terms of runs), will want to prove to themselves and to the men who matter that there is still a lot of cricket left in them. Gautam Gambhir led by example in his team’s run-up to the title last season and he will be keen for a repeat of that performance.
Virender Sehwag, recovering from back spasms, will be playing without the burden of captaincy and he will want to get back to being the devastating batsman the world knows him to be.
There are several other players to look out for. In the Delhi Daredevils line-up, look out for the young Unmukt Chand who recently scored consecutive centuries in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 competition and also Umesh Yadav who announced his return to competitive cricket with a five-wicket haul in the same tournament.
In the Knight Riders line-up, keep your eyes trained on the ever-reliable Jacques Kallis and the dangerous Yusuf Pathan. Kallis, who has looked rusty recently, will want to hit the straps immediately while Yusuf Pathan will want to add consistency to his game in addition to carrying the reputation of being a match-winner.
Previous Meetings
The Kolkata Knight Riders and the Delhi Daredevils have so far met on nine occasions, with the former having a slight edge with five wins. In the last battle between the two, it was the Knight Riders who get the better of the Daredevils in the Play-Off match in IPL 2012.
Trivia
The Kolkata Knight Riders will be keen to improve on their home record from last season. Gambhir’s team won nine of their ten away fixtures in 2012, but only managed to win three off the seven matches in their backyard.
David Warner will have fond memories of playing against the Kolkata Knight Riders, for it was against them that he scored his maiden IPL century.
What Next
Both teams will square off against the Rajasthan Royals in their next fixtures. The Delhi Daredevils will play host to Rahul Dravid’s team on April 6 while the Kolkata Knight Riders will line-up against the Royals at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on April 8.

Gautam’s the finest captain: SRK

KKR co-owner lauds skipper Gambhir’s ability to get the best out of his players

After four years of disappointments, Kolkata Knight Riders’ co-owner Shah Rukh Khan finally tasted the sweet taste of victory. His team clinched the title against the Chennai Super Kingsunder thrilling circumstances and ensured that the franchise’s trophy cabinet got a noteworthy centrepiece. The Bollywood icon was at his motivating best in the stands; and once Manoj Tiwaryhit the winning runs, there was delirium in the KKR camp. The joy of winning the IPL is unparalleled and King Khan experienced the feeling that he’d been craving for a while.

During a brief chat after the match, SRK revealed to iplt20.com that he considers Gautam Gambhir the best captain in the world.

Excerpts:

How does it feel to be the owner of the IPL champions?

I don’t feel like the owner. We were the promoters who started this team and I always wanted our city, Kolkata, to feel that they are the owners and we are the employees of the city. I am really sorry to say that Juhi [Chawla], Jay [Mehta], Gauri [Khan] and I end up being the owners of KKR. From tonight, KKR is owned by Kolkata. So, please look after it and give it a lot of love because we have nurtured it with a lot of care and happiness.

What were you going through in the end stages?

I prayed to Allah and all the farishteys of Allah. I said, “Please make this happen as it’s been a long time.” I understand that it’s a sport, but I need to do this for my children and all the people who love me and for all of them who believed in KKR. We have had some good times, some bad times and controversies; we have been able to rise above all that. We had to prove it to the world and to us actually and to our children mainly, my son Aryan, my daughter Suhana, Jhanvi and Arjun. If you are resilient and if you believe and if you have a dream, it will come true.

Your faith in youngsters has finally borne fruit through Manvinder Bisla

The team is completely run by Gautam and Trevor [Bayliss]. These guys know cricket, and we guys come and pray and give them a lot of love. I don’t know much about cricket, so we just go by the decisions they make. We have never participated in the cricket part of it, be it in a positive or a negative way. Gautam runs the cricket and we just hope that the youngsters do well.

Is Gautam Gabmhir the perfect captain for KKR?

I am not questioning any of the captains in the IPL, I love [MS] Dhoni, Harbhajan [Singh] and Sachin [Tendulkar], and they all are friends and they love me. But as I have seen Gautam so up close and I have been in a profession which requires quick decisions and toughness, I really do believe that Gautam is the finest captain I have seen in recent times.

No pressure to perform being defending champions: Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir might be out of form and out of favour in the Indian whites. But when Gambhir dons that IPL jersey, Kolkata Knight Riders is what holds utmost importance. When asked if he would take this IPL as a perfect platform to make a comeback into the national side, Gambhir was quick to respond.
“I see this IPL as being the defending champions. I do not talk about individuals and do not play for individuals. I play for a team called KKR and I would like to focus on that and not more than that.”

The Knight Riders clichéd their maiden IPL title last year in Chennai, defeating the hosts ad then defending champions. Gambhir also said that the team, being defending champions won’t be under any kind of pressure to perform. “The tag of defending champions will give us more confidence than pressure. We have got the monkey off our backs winning the IPL title last year and we have shown that we can play good cricket on the field. It is now time that we play some fearless cricket.”

Like their opponents, Delhi Daredevils, KKR too will be missing out on their hard hitting opener, Brendon McCullum. So is the opening slot a cause of concern and does it miss out on quality?

“Not at all! We have a lot of quality in the dressing room, and it only gives lots of opportunities for others in the side to do something better for the team. Hope we all step up to the occasion and someone can end up being the match winner tomorrow.”

Delhi will be missing out on their key fast bowler in Morne Morkel, and when asked if that could play as an advantage for the Knights, the captain said, “Look we don’t think about individuals. It doesn’t matter if XYZ from the other camp is playing or not. It is a game of cricket and you do not think about any particular individual. You go out there to compete a game against an entire team. We just want to go out there and play a good game of cricket.”

The captain also refused to give much importance to the Eden pitch but hoped that they started the tournament on a high. “I think we have all the bases covered and we do not believe in talking about wickets. We are ready to play well in any kind of surface and anywhere. We just want to go out there and play quality cricket and play to our potential and see how it goes. Hopefully the new pitch will be lucky for us.”

Brett Lee doubles up as bowler and bowling mentor this season in the absence of Wasim Akram. KKR coach Trevor Bayliss was satisfied with the speedster’s role in the team.

“Brett Lee has done a good job so far. We have been together in three or four practices and he has played a good role. He has done some good work with the pace bowlers and I am sure we will benefit from his experience in this IPL.”

The captain added that the team was upbeat and ready for the challenge and was eagerly looking forward to their first game on Wednesday.
Saying, “The players are ready. Most of the players were playing T20 tournaments. They have been going through a lot of training sessions. They are fresh and the most important thing is they need to come all prepared tomorrow. I can say the team is ready for the challenge tomorrow,” Gambhir signed off.

Kolkata Knight Riders Launch New Campaign

Kolkata Knight Riders Launch New Campaign
The Kolkata Knight Riders launched their new brand campaign - 'One Team. One Pledge.'  for the 2013 IPL season. The vibrant new visual campaign builds on the KKR anthem, 'Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo.'
Venky Mysore, CEO  & MD of KKR said "We are excited about the upcoming season and I believe that one of the most important reasons for the success of KKR is that everyone believes in the "TEAM KKR" concept - No individual is bigger than the team. Our new theme - "One Team. One Pledge." is consistent with this philosophy as well as KKR’s continued commitment to the promise of ‘Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo.’
The new design makes extensive use of typography, and will feature across KKR’s advertising, media, outdoor and indoor branding.

The Skipper The Squad

Time for some serious cricket at the Eden Gardens. Gautam came in from Baroda straight after attending Yusuf Pathan’s reception and was raring to go in the nets.
He was joined by Debabrata Das and Laxmi Ratan Shukla, both of whom were fresh from their Mushtaq Ali campaign – and looked fit and in form.
Yet another addition to our coaching staff, Trevor Penney joined the squad as fielding coach and almost immediately made a difference to the intensity of the sessions.
Earlier, lots of coordination and planning went into an elaborate operation where Brett Lee actually visited the house of a KKR contest winner. Watch out for the details – and check out the amazing video of that surprise visit at http://youtu.be/bhYMZldiehk

Knight Vision

Knight Vision
Gautam Gambhir scored a brilliant century as captain of India A in a practice match against the visiting Australians in Chennai. In the first innings, Gambhir scored 112(162b ; 13X4 ; 3X6) to set India A up for a big total. Manoj Tiwary later bolstered the team’s score with a powerpacked 129(187b ; 18X4 ; 3X6) that helped India A finish on 451 against a strong Aussie bowling lineup.
Brendon McCullum has been in great form against England, scoring a blistering 74 off 38 balls in the 2nd T20I to help NZ register a 55 run win over England. He carried this form into the ODI’s by smashing 69 off 61 balls to lead his team to a tense 3 wicket win over England in the first match of the series on Sunday.
In the Vijay Hazare trophy, LR Shukla (5/34) and Manoj Tiwary (55) led Bengal to an 11 run win over Odisha while Iqbal Abdulla put in another spectacular all round performance for Mumbai (43 off 32 balls & 3/44) to take them to a 17 run win over Baroda.
Shakib Al Hasan put in a terrific all round performance for Dhaka Gladiators to take his team into the final of the BPL. In the semi final, Shakib scored 59 off 29 balls and followed it up by taking 2 wickets for 25 runs to give his team a comfortable 29 run win.

Gautam Gambhir's Moment of Reckoning

While all eyes are on Virender Sehwag, who will be playing in his 100th Test, and Sachin Tendulkar, who will probably be featuring in his last Test on home soil, one man will be happy to have the focus off him: Gautham Gembir

The southpaw averages a disappointing 27.76 in his last 22 Tests and has scored just eight fifties. A battling 93 against South Africa at Cape Town is the closest the Indian opener has come to three figures.

With the selectors set to announce the squad for the remaining two Tests in Kolkata and Nagpur, and players like Murali Vijay and Ajinkya Rahanebreathing down his neck, the unusually long rope that he has been offered is fast threatening to become a noose. Gambhir knows that he has to deliver and what better venue for a second coming than the Wankhede, where he made his Test debut against Australia in the winter of 2004.

That game, played on a sand paper of a pitch, ended in just over two days and Gambhir fell to single-digit scores in both innings. But a 96 in Kanpur, against South Africa in his next Test, helped him get established. The tour of Bangladesh that followed saw him getting his first hundred (139) in Chittagong. Indifferent form against Pakistan and Sri Lanka at home, where he repeatedly fell lbw or bowled after falling over onto the leg side, saw him banished from the Test squad for almost two years.

All this while he kept scoring runs in domestic cricket and despite good performances in ODIs and T20s, he was desperate to make a Test comeback. His moment of reckoning came in the Ranji final against Uttar Pradesh at, where else but the Wankhede.

Leading Delhi, he was out for a blob to Praveen Kumar in the first innings as his side conceded a first-innings lead of 52 to UP. With chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar watching, everyone thought Gambhir had blown his chance again. But thanks to Pradeep Sangwan's five-wicket haul, Delhi were given a second lease of life and UP were bowled out for 177 and set Delhi 230 to win.

On a tricky wicket, Gambhir took the bull by the horns and smashed an unbeaten 130 off 154 balls to help Delhi bag the title and win Vengsarkar's confidence as he slotted him in for the Tri-series Down Under in which he scored two hundreds.

He hasn't looked back since.

Wankhede is also the venue where he soaked in the pressure like a sponge and slammed a brilliant and determined 97 in the World Cup final against Sri Lanka. His knock and the 109-run partnership with skipper MS Dhoni, after India had lost Sehwag (0) and Tendulkar (18) with the total on 31 in a tough chase of 275, were instrumental in India emerging champions.

Now with his career at the crossroads, Gambhir is back on the ground that launched him into the spotlight. Will it also help in his reincarnation as a Test batsman?

I play to win, not to compete: Gambhir

The IPL 2012 final is all set to be a battle between the seasoned big-game pros and the eager first-timers. The Kolkata Knight Riders will walk out as equals for the first time in the biggest match of the IPL calendar. KKR is a team moulded in the reflection of its skipper, Gautam Gambhir. The southpaw has not only led from the front with the bat, but has also ensured that the team stays united through thick and thin.

Awaiting the franchise’s biggest test till date, Gambhir is keen to prove his side’s mettle in the crunch encounter on Sunday. The KKR skipper minced no words in the pre-match captains’ press conference where he emphasised the need to play with aggression in order to topple the mightyChennai Supeer Kings.

Excerpts from Gautam Gambhir’s pre-match press conference.

On the contrast between his on and off-field demeanour
.

I don’t know what the real Gaum Gambhir is like. When you go out on the field, you don’t go out to make friends. You go out to get results for your teams. And for that if I have to be aggressive on the field [so be it]. That’s what I play cricket for; I play to win the game and not just to compete. So, on the field if I have to be aggressive at times, I have to be. If I can rub that energy off on the other 10 players, and I have always maintained that it’s the 11 players that make a successful captain. A successful captain doesn’t make a successful team. So, I have never undermined my role as a captain and I’ve always believed that it’s the 11 players that win you the game of cricket. Individuals can only contribute and they are picked to contribute. Tomorrow, if I get picked for a certain team, that is my responsibility to score runs. I am not doing anybody a favour. I am going out there to do a job for myself.

On playing a formidable CSK side in Chennai.

No doubt they are playing in their own backyard and they’ve been two-time winners, so they know how to play the finals. This is our first final, but you always believe that you go into a big game like this you start at 50-50. Especially in a T20 game when you go out on the field, there is no time to make comebacks; you always have to be on your toes. I’ve always maintained that Chennai is a very good side, especially in their own backyard. Their record speaks for them. So, we need to be up for it and we need to be more than 100 percent tomorrow to try and play some good cricket. And I’ve always believed that results are not in your favour, the only thing that’s in your favour is to go out there and give your 100 percent. If we play to our potential, definitely we’ll be having a good game tomorrow.

On the focus being on the Super Kings making it a hat-trick of IPL titles, ahead of the final.

They won twice in a row [IPL titles], so obviously the talk has to be around them. But I’ve always maintained that it’s good to go into the game with a low profile. In such games there are no favourites, there are no underdogs. To me, everyone in a big game starts at 50-50; whoever plays well on that day takes the cake. Chennai is a very good side and whatever talks are happening about them, they deserve every bit of it. At the same time, we’ve played some good cricket and we’ve got a lot of quality; not only this year. The way we’ve played in the last two years, we deserve every bit of it [success].

On what the fans mean to the team.

Whenever we’ve walked on to the field, we don’t go out to play for individuals. We’ve always wanted to give some joy back to the Kolkata people. I think they’ve given us fantastic support even in the first three years when things were not going our way. So, when we walk out on the field tomorrow, I can promise all the KKR fans that we’ll go out there and give our 100 percent. KKR is not about one or two heroes, it’s about the people who have supported us back home.

Dhoni and Gambhir inspire differently

The road to glory is often arduous, and the path towards the IPL title is certainly one that requires a lot of character and temperance. Sport has no definite formula for success; as a result, the IPL 2012 final also presents an opportunity to witness two contrasting captaincy styles of the leaders of the two finalists. MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir might have played and won a lot together, but come Sunday, they’ll be trying to outfox each other with their own brand of leadership.

The Super Kings have been there and done that by peaking at the right time and carrying on that momentum all the way till winning the trophy. Meanwhile, the Knight Riders are making their first appearance in an IPL final thanks to Gambhir’s ability to get his players firing in unison.

“Gautam is an aggressive captain – a bit different from me. I am aggressive as well, but I’m not very expressive on the field and that has been the strength of CSK. Gautam, on the other hand, is very expressive,” Dhoni said as he emphasised how he’s different from the KKR skipper.

“Even if the game is in his pocket, he is still on his toes, demanding that his players keep up the momentum and wrap the game up convincingly. That is his strength as a leader and he’s done really well with KKR,” he added.

The goal of both teams remains the same but the method chosen for achieving victory varies. KKR follow their skipper’s mantra of one for all and all for one, while CSK leave more room for individual brilliance; for example, Murali Vijay’s electrifying knock in Qualifier 2 against the Delhi Daredevils.

“KKR is not about one or two heroes, it’s about the people who have supported us back home,” Gambhir emphasised ahead of Sunday’s final.
Dhoni, on the other hand, put the onus on one of the 22 players to etch his name in their team’s folklore. “It’s another opportunity for someone to be a hero – that’s how I look at it. Tomorrow somebody, either from our side or KKR will be a hero,” he said.

All in all, the final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium promises to be a fascinating encounter with a battle of cricketing philosophies awaiting fans worldwide.

KKR won't just go out there to compete, says skipper Gambhir

KKR won't just go out there to compete, says skipper GambhirCHENNAI: Gautam Gambhir's dazzling form and the aggressive streak in his captaincy has helped KKR make it to their maiden IPL final and the skipper warned his opposition on the eve of the final that he and his wards won't be there "to just compete but to get results."

"When you go on to the field, you do not go there to make friends but you are there to get results in your team's favour. You have to be aggressive on the field. That is how we have won matches and now we are in the final and not to just compete," the aggressive Delhi lad told the mediapersons during the pre-match conference, here today.

Asked about his aggressive nature, the southpaw says that it works for him.

"If I have to be aggressive on the field, I have to grab that energy. The other thing is that the 11 people make a successful captain. So, I have undermined my role as a captain. I always believe individuals should contribute to the team's cause. They are bound perform and they are picked to contribute."

Beating Chennai Super Kings in their own backyard is an onerous task and Gambhir believes that his boys are up for the challenge.

"No doubt that they are playing in their own backyard. They are two-time winners and they know how to play in the final. I always believed that in a big game like, it's a 50-50 case at the start. We have to be on our toes. We need to give more than hundred percent tomorrow.

"I think we play very good cricket and there is lot of quality attached to our game. Not only this year but people were talking about our team last year too and just one bad game and we finished fourth. Hopefully, we can play some good cricket and see where the result goes."

For Gambhir, the support they have received from general Kolkata public has been fantastic and it's time that KKR win it for their fans.

"You do not walk on to the field to play as an individual and we play for the Kolkata people, who have been fantastic support to our team. They have supported us even when things were not going in our way," Gambhir said.

"When we onto the pitch tomorrow, we will give our hundred per cent and KKR is not one or two individuals but it is about millions back home who have been supporting us. They supported us in all our bad times. They have always been praying for us. When we walked tomorrow, there will be no shortage of our effort and hopefully we can try and win the title and give them the joy. Kolkata after all is always known as a city of Joy," he concluded.

Narine's action makes him difficult to read: Dhoni

Narine's action makes him difficult to read: DhoniCHENNAI: Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Saturay said that Sunil Narine is a difficult customer to read and added that he is well aware of the threat the mystery spinner could pose when they meet Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League final on Sunday.

"With his action, it is difficult to catch him as to which side he is bowling whether it is the one that comes in to a right hander or it goes out," Dhoni said on Saturday.

Narine has bamboozled batsmen with his trickery this season, and has been a key figure in KKR's march to the final of the tournament.

"The variation he has got and the consistency that he has got in maintaining line and length has been crucial. We have seen that consistency from a bowler has always paid dividends.

Dhoni felt the West Indian has got all the traits to be a successful bowler in this form of the game.

"If you have both consistency and line and length and got the variations, the bowler will be successful more often than not in this format since the batsmen look to take you on. That is the time, such bowlers try and get their wickets."

The India captain, who is aiming for a hat-trick of titles with CSK, lauded Murali Vijay's match-winning ton against Delhi Daredevils, but said he needed to train himself in a way through which he can express himself more on field.

"I advised him to go to the nets and express himself and if you do not bat the way you have been we will not back you. He responded very well. He took the few sessions in right stride and got back to his usual rhythm.

"Vijay is a very talented cricketer. When he started for us, he did not do really well and in between we gave him rest for quite a few games. We told him that we want Murali Vijay to bat and we do not want any other batsmen to start for us.

"The kind of cricket he has been playing for us, he has been successful. He has got the right talent that is needed to be successful at this level. He was not himself and it was our main concern."

According to Dhoni, KKR's Gautam Gambhir is an expressive captain.

"Gautam is very expressive on the field. Even when the match is in his pocket, he demands the individuals to perform and wrap the game in the best possible manner. That is where his strength lies. He has done really well with the Kolkata Knight Riders.

"Gautam is an aggressive captain, a bit different from me in the sense that if you see our side, we are aggressive but not expressive on the field. That has been the strength of Chennai super kings.

Talking further about captaincy, Dhoni said, "I think how good a captain you are depends on what resources you have and how individuals react to the scenario under pressure. There are few players who will react in different way and few will get bogged down.

"I think as a captain what is important is that he has to channelise the resources in the possible right direction for the desired result."

Dhoni said Sunday's final will be another opportunity for the players to leave their imprint.

"Well, it is another opportunity for someone to be a hero. That is what I look at. 11 guys are on the field and one of them from either side has the opportunity to raise his hand and be counted to be a hero. So, tomorrow somebody will be a hero from our side or Kolkata side and you can watch.

According to Dhoni, the outcome of the match will largely depend on how the individuals adapt to the conditions.

"Result is something you get depending on what you do in those 3-3-1/2 hours of play and how individuals adopt to the conditions. It will be about what kind of cricket you play on the field and the kind of potential you have got.

"That will be the key notes and it will be a high pressure scenario. Tomorrow being the final, there will be added pressure on each and every individual. How individuals react to the situations will be the key for success."

Dhoni said that it's important to use the resources in a way that doesn't require them to change their natural game.

"The emphasis is on the players going and enjoying the game and expressing themselves. It is important to use them in a way where they don't really need to change their natural game plan. They need to stick to what they know best and use the resources in the right way, at the right time.

"You know that has really worked for us. Individuals have also stepped up whenever we needed those couple of big performances in crucial games in the bowling or batting department. Overall, if you see our fielding has improved.

"Right from the first edition, we are constantly working on fielding. That department is very crucial. I can say cutting 5 to 10 runs in the format and in the last over it will have a big impact in the game. Now we are proud of the fact that we are a very good fielding side.

R Ashwin had said in Bangalore that was ready to go for a holiday before CSK roared back just in time to book a last-minute final berth, and told about that, Dhoni said he also felt alike when faced with a similar situation.

"That is exactly what I did also because in a key match there was a situation in Australia we could have moved to the finals but it did not work our way and a similar situation was there in the Asia Cup and it also did not go our way.

"Just sitting and watching it to go our way do not really help us. We try to enjoy each and every game. We had the similar mindset and it worked in our way and we opened our bags and reached Chennai from Bangalore.

Asked if there is any particular strategy for the final, he said it remains pretty much the same.

"The planning and strategy are the same. Whatever the reason may be, we could not execute our plans but in the playoff matches we have done quite well in all the three departments."

To sign off Dhoni said his wife hates to see CSK lose. "She wanted every result to go in our favour. She was the one who was eagerly watching the games. More often than not, she will turn her face away from the television because she could not watch it."
